The Erasmus Plus Project which is called as "Read in Europe" aims to improve learning language skills in English and writing, readind literacy texts. As the paricipant of the project we are trying perform creative and reading schools with some workshops and different tools like blog site. You can find many materials in the site of our school's teachers and students. This article is showing our aims and attitudes in the project.

Read in Europe (View From Turkish Participent-Attitutes, Tools,Methods)

Project Team

Literature is a skill that must be learned, not an innate talent. Good, effective comprehension does not come naturally with the ability to read for everyone, and so teachers and parents must make the extra effort to teach young students the analytical skills required to comprehend texts to their fullest. There are some tools and strategies for to inform it of course.

As Being A Reader In The Classroom

This literacy strategy is best exercised early on in a classroom setting, or in a self-taught environment if you're practicing reading comprehension skills on your own. Readers should be given a page of text, or other relatively short passage that they can finish reading within one minute.

After that thirty seconds or so, the reader should then return to the passage for another minute. After that minute, they should turn the page over again, and write out any information they remember that they didn't specify before.

With this exercise, young readers can better gauge how much information they're capable of absorbing at a time. Pacing is as much a factor in reading comprehension is anything, and understanding where your skills currently stand before a lesson is as important as knowing where you want them to be after the lesson.

To Form Vocabulary List

Much of literacy comes down to understanding, misunderstanding, or simply not knowing the definition of certain words. The right vocabulary can make or break your ability to comprehend a text. After the minute is over, the reader should turn over the page, and take thirty seconds to write down everything they remember from the passage - every single detail and piece of information that comes to mind. This isn't about prioritizing information, it's about identifying how much information a reader is able.

The vocabulary listing technique asks that the reader write out words he or she does not quite know the definition of, on a separate sheet of paper. Even if they're familiar with the word, but feel unclear on the way the word is being used - they should write down any and all words, phrases, and terms that they are uncertain of.

After reading the text, they should search for each word and phrase's definition, write it down, and re-read the text using these new-found definitions as a key

Some Strategies

One strategy we can  use to improve student literacy is giving all departments training on how to assess and mark writing for accuracy. We can give five-minute presentations on ways of checking different mistakes. For example, in one half-term we focused on the use of apostrophes in students' writing. Teachers were reminded of the rules of apostrophes and asked to highlight mistakes in work they marked, irrespective of the subject. The idea behind the approach is to flag up how important accuracy is and make the point that clarity in writing will improve students' grades across all subjects.

We can be a big fan of teachers sharing what they're reading. I saw a lovely reading wall in a school cafeteria area recently. Small pieces of coloured card were pinned to a board showing the name of the teacher or student, what they were currently reading and a sentence about the book. If the book was available in the school library or local library, this was also mentioned. There were even print outs of the book covers dotted around the board - it looked amazing.

Reading short stories can be proved popular with our students. We have always taught a short story unit, but this term I decided to find the more unusual and challenging texts for my class. The short story is brilliant because it ensures students can be engaged without investing too much time or energy, but the depth of stories, such as Sait Faik Abasıyanık's (Turkish story writer) "Mahalle Kahvesi", Anton Cehov's short stories and Gogol's short stories, enable children of all abilities to be engaged with the book.

Give students the time to properly invest in what they're writing: Often in class we can rush students from one piece of writing to another and in doing so inadvertently embed poor literacy. When children start to take pride in their writing, they are willing to work on their errors. We tend to remember the things we take pride in as well. Redrafting and slowing down the writing process are key. You can read about some of the strategies I use to do this on my blog

Get students to read a text aloud in different ways to demonstrate expression and intonation. You can then take this a step further by getting them to improvise a scenario to explore how a character may feel about a certain event or situation. Role play is a good way to develop students' awareness of how dialogue is spoken when they are reading silently and I've found it good for word decoding. Also, both techniques can be useful and fun ways of developing oral skills.

What we are planning for that

-Touching books and places that writers had been lived (grup activity)

-Role playing (To live and dramatisation of book's characters

-Poetry in theatratical performance ( Feeling the poems)

-Workshops for writing and reading

-Reading Europian literature (texts-stories-poems in English)

-Using local libraries and school library

-Reading with local writers ( workshops)

-Creating living classes with books for to improve reading skills of students.

-Being a blogger (Performing blog siteson literature and creative writing)

-Visiting İstanbul "Book Fair" which is performing in every year .

- To form a literacy magazine with students which includes examples of literature and creative writings

To find and improve new tools: Creating Dijital Literacy and Creative Writing as a Blogger

If students are "glued" 24/7 to their mobile devices, why is it necessary for schools to teach digital literacy? Who should teach it? And wait ... what does it even mean to be "digitally literate"?

Many adults think that because children have been immersed in a technology since a young age, they are naturally "literate" or skilled in using technology. Younger generations have been labeled "digital natives" while older generations are "digital immigrants." Some research suggests this labeling is outright false-students are no more literate with devices than their so-called digital immigrant parents.

Creating a Digital Literacy Curriculum

Like traditional literacy, students and adults alike benefit from guidance, instruction, and practice. Educators should define essential skills and steps for helping students navigate their devices (and the unfettered world of the Internet). It's also important to take appropriate steps toward digital literacy based on children's stage of development. Common Sense Media has developed a scope and sequence curriculum to help teachers and districts formalize digital literacy instruction.

Teachers should also help students develop healthy habits and attitudes when using technology. Educators need to take an active role in helping them understand the benefits, dangers, and opportunities technology provides.
